Shillies is Cumbrian for gravel and as it turns out, we've got plenty of it. Not the beautifully groomed gravel tracks you may find in the States but more the natural, slightly rough around the edges variety.

Ghyllside Cycles have been working on a challenge event that takes in some of the finest gravel tracks in the area along a 100km route. Whilst the distance may seem on the short side to the hardened roadies out there, the elevation and nature of the trails will almost definitely make up for it. This one isn't for the faint hearted.

Entries cost £30 and will include your ticket to the Adventure Cycle Festival, making them an absolute steal. For the challenge to be in line with the adventurous spirit of the event, the trails won't be waymarked but there will be a couple of feed stations along the route. You will be armed with GPS coordinates or a traditional paper map as well as a timing chip.

It's definitely not a race but it will definitely be a challenge. Finishers will get an engraved stainless steel pint pot, their time in a spreadsheet and tonnes of kudos. There will also be spot prizes to be had.
